Yesterday Prof. Adam Dziewonski passed away, one of the fathers of modern seismology, whom INGV had the honor of having as President of the Scientific Evaluation Board from 2006 to 2010. Adam Dziewonski was one of the pioneers of seismic tomography and true forerunner of modern studies of the structure of the mantle and of the earth's core, formulating fundamental insights and discoveries for understanding the dynamics of the planet. He also introduced a radically innovative approach to the study of seismic sources, the CMT, which has been the most reliable reference for the study of global seismicity for decades. He has received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal of the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, the prestigious Crafoord Prize of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Bowie Medal of the American Geophysical Union. At INGV we remember with enormous esteem and affection when he frequented our headquarters, taking an inquisitive interest in our research, dispensing, with great affability and dedication, comments and valuable suggestions that helped us grow. World geophysics today mourns the disappearance of man and scientist.
