Data for citizens 2016 is the award assigned by the Scientific Committee of the Esri Italia 2016 Conference to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) for the project The use of Map Journals in INGV's communication activities. It was collected during the congress at the Ergife Palace Hotel in Rome by Maurizio Pignone, geologist of the National Earthquake Center (CNT-INGV), who since 2013 has taken care of the creation of numerous story maps on seismicity and seismic risk, which can be consulted in the Story Maps & Earthquakes (http://terremoti.ingv.it/storymaps).
Story maps are web applications that provide reliable and scientifically valid information in connection with traditional official channels (web, social media and BLOG), thanks to their dynamism and narrative vocation. In particular, the map journals allow the description of the characteristics of an earthquake and the seismicity of the affected area in a simple and precise way through interactive maps, photos and videos.
During the Conference, INGV also organised, in collaboration with Esri Italia, a training course for journalists on the subject of Communication and information through Story Maps.
