The map illustrates the distribution of the hypocenters of about 20.000 earthquakes that occurred between 2000 and 2007 in Italy. Most earthquakes have a Richter magnitude of less than 4.0 and ? located in the earth's crust above 35 km. Only 11 earthquakes have a Richter magnitude greater than 5.0 and the largest? strong earthquake yes ? occurred on 26 October 2006 off the western Calabrian coast (M = 5.7) at a depth? of 200km.
