The province of Campobasso has been affected in recent days by numerous earthquakes. From 1 January 2016 to today, around 80 events have been located, most of which occurred in the last 4 days. There are about 40 earthquakes of magnitude equal to or greater than 2.0 with three events exceeding 3.0: the magnitude ML4.1 (Mw 4.3) earthquake of 19.55 and ML 3.4 at 21.00 Italian time on 16 January, and that of ML 3.2 at 01.28 Italian on 17 January.

Molise is historically characterized by very strong earthquakes located within the regional territory or in its immediate vicinity, but earthquakes that occurred in Campania, Puglia and Abruzzo have also produced very serious effects in the Molise area.
