On 4 December, at 00:34 Italian time, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) located an earthquake of magnitude ML 4.2 (Mw 4.0), at a depth of 8 km between the provinces of Rieti and L'Aquila, 3 km east of Amatrice. The municipalities closest to the epicenter are: Amatrice (RI), Campotosto (AQ), Accumoli (RI).
