The exhibition "Naples - History, Art, Volcanoes" curated by the Vesuvius Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (OV-INGV) and set up in the seventeenth-century Basilica della Pietrasanta, in the heart of the center historian of Naples (Piazzetta Pietrasanta, 21-17). The exhibition, which can be visited until 19 March 30, will retrace the history of the Neapolitan territory, the result of the activity and dynamics of volcanoes and the profound interaction with man.

The itinerary, created in the underground cavity of the city, will be articulated around a blow-up of the stratigraphy of the soil, the different types of rock and a film on the eruption of the Neapolitan yellow tuff, projected onto a suggestive tuff wall. With a system presented to the public for the first time, which replicates the one present in the surveillance room of the Vesuvius Observatory, a giant screen will allow the epicenters of earthquakes in the volcanic areas of Naples to be viewed. Furthermore, along the way it will be possible to come across a virtual guide, the volcanologist Pietro with his bat friend Stella, who will discover the subsoil together with the visitors, in the comics created by the Comix school.

To complete the installation in the Basilica, the 15 gouaches from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries from the Vesuvius Observatory collection will be exhibited for the first time in the capital of Campania. Subject of the paintings, the eruptions of Vesuvius in the past centuries, when it was in a state of semi-persistent activity with spectacular eruptions. To suggest the profound link between art, science and the volcano, the itinerary will be integrated by the works of the Neapolitan artist Gennaro Regina created during the last edition of the International Congress "Cities on Volcanoes", held in September. The proceeds from admissions to this area will be donated to the "A Volcano for Research" project which will serve to finance a research grant on the theme "Naples - History, Art, Volcanoes" to be entrusted to a young researcher under the supervision of experts from the Neapolitan section of INGV.
