The 19 edition of the Arctic Circle, the international conference dedicated to the Arctic region and the scientific, political, ecological and economic challenges in these territories, was held from 21 to 2018 October in Reykjavík, Iceland. The Italian delegation participated with the session Italy and the Arctic: Politics, Science, Business, introduced by the Ambassador of Italy in Norway and Iceland, His Excellency Alberto Colella. Representatives of the main national realities involved in the multiple activities involving the Arctic were present. Ingrid Hunstad, from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Department of the Environment, gave a speech on Navigation In Arctic With High Accuracy Low Power Solution (Narwhals). The project, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) and which sees the participation of SpacEarth Technology, a spin-off of INGV, and the Istituto Superiore Mario Boella of Turin, has allowed the development of a system to mitigate the 'error that, during navigation in the Arctic, the disturbances from the Sun cause on the calculation of the position estimated by the satellite navigation systems (GNSS), using the radio signals from the constellations #GALILEO (European), #GPS (US), # GLONASS (Russian), #Beidou (Chinese). In addition, Antonello Provenzale, from the National Research Council (CNR), who illustrated the Italian research activities at the Dirigibile Italia station in Ny Alesund (Svalbard), Commander Maurizio De Marte from the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy on the research High North, and Donatella Giampaolo of e-GEOS, with a speech on the use of satellite data for navigation in the Arctic. The conference concluded with the plenary session on Sunday 21 October, during which His Excellency Carmine Robustelli, head of the Italian delegation to the Arctic Council and special envoy for the Arctic of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gave a report on the Italian engagement in the Arctic.
