With almost 900 registered presences, citizens participated with exceptional enthusiasm in the open day "Earthquakes between memory and prevention for seismic literacy" organized on Sunday 20 January by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at its headquarters in Rome .
A highly successful event dedicated to knowledge and in-depth analysis, with the narrative voices of the INGV researchers who guided the visitors in the story of the institution's activities, among the vibrations of the earthquakes, the explosions of the volcanoes, the wonders of the environment that surrounds us and the tools for preventing natural risks in our country.
The astonishment of the approximately 300 children and teenagers involved in the educational workshops on volcanoes, earthquakes and the environment was the culmination of a day of intense participation in the marvels of scientific research.
The institutional fulcrum of the first National Earthquake Day was the Round Table on the role of memory, prevention and seismic literacy which was attended by the President of INGV Carlo Doglioni, the Councilor of the Lazio Region, former Mayor of Amatrice, Sergio Pirozzi, the Head of the Casa Italia Department Roberto Marino, the Head of Emergency Psychology of ANPAS (National Association of Public Assistance) Simona Ius, the Director Agostino Miozzo of the Department of Civil Protection (DPC), the Manager Alessio Argentieri of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital and Marco Incocciati of the Order of Geologists of Lazio. The institutional appointment, as well as the seminars with the researchers who animated the second part of the event, was dedicated to the Marsica earthquake of 13 January 1915 which caused more than 30.000 victims and vast damage in central Italy, becoming one of the most destructive seismic events in the history of the country.
The purpose of INGV's National Earthquake Day is, in fact, to sensitize public opinion on the importance of studying natural hazards in order to acquire an intrinsic awareness of the effective safety of the places where we live.
Among other things, the event was associated with the Law of the Lazio Region which established the "Regional Seismic Literacy Day" (LR 18 December 2018, n. 12), in order to sensitize civil society to virtuous and responsible behaviour.
