The Nature Index Collaborations 2016 report, compiled since 2014 by a group of experts in the field, monitored collaborations among the top 50 national and international institutions from September 1, 2015, to August 31, 2016. The results place the INGV among the world's scientific institutions in the "Earth and environmental sciences" ranking, where NASA is first. During the period analyzed, the INGV undertook 68,59% of international collaborations and 31,41% of domestic collaborations. The top three foreign institutions in terms of number of collaborations are the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the US Geological Survey (USGS), and Durham University - United Kingdom. The University of Rome "La Sapienza", the University of Palermo, and the University of Perugia are among the top 3 for national collaborations.
