The scientific and industrial world meets in the "World Capital of Geothermal Energy", in Tuscany, for days of study and discussion on know-how for sustainable development.
Today and tomorrow, 11 and 12 October, in Larderello in Tuscany, representatives of scientific institutions and the energy industry of 25 countries meet, with about 200 participants, at the International Geothermal Association.
The "The Geothermal Icon" workshop, organized in collaboration with Enel Green Power as part of the "Accelerating Geothermal" program, aims to share know-how on geothermal energy for sustainable and progressive development towards the ecological energy transition in Italy and in the world.
An appointment to share high-level scientific discussions and field visits, immersed in the natural manifestations and geothermal plants of Tuscany. Numerous participants and speakers from the international scientific, academic and industrial world. The conference revealed how in many countries geothermal energy has become an irreplaceable resource for the sustainable energy mix.
Larderello, which for decades has housed a high-tech plant for transforming the area's geothermal heat into energy, is confirmed as the world capital of geothermal energy.
Enel Green Power's Tuscan geothermal district is the oldest and at the same time the most innovative in the world: 34 geothermal power plants distributed across the provinces of Pisa, Siena and Grosseto. In this way it is possible to produce almost 6 billion KWh per year which satisfies about 33% of Tuscany's electricity needs, providing useful heat to heat over 10 users, 26 hectares of greenhouses and companies in the agri-food and handicraft industries.
Furthermore, geothermal energy also has relevance as a cultural, historical and tourist asset, registering around 60 visits a year, through unpublished itineraries in the warm heart of Tuscany.
The IGA (International Geothermal Association), founded in 1988, is a scientific, educational and cultural organization that operates on a global scale. The organization has more than 2.000 members from 65 countries, has special advisor status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and is a partner of the European Union in the Campaign for Take Off (CTO) for Renewable Energy. The objectives of the Association are to encourage the research, development and utilization of geothermal resources worldwide through the compilation, publication and dissemination of scientific and technical information and data, both within the community of geothermal specialists and between them and public opinion.
