600 athletes from 21 different nations took part in the “XII Etna Supermarathon” (www.verticaletna.it). Objective: to reach the summit of the most active volcano in Europe, Etna, starting from the shores of the Ionian Sea. The event, organized by the Etna Trail ASD association, saw the adhesion of the Etna Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV-OE). The INGV-OE researchers illustrated to participants and spectators the geological and volcanological characteristics encountered along the route of the Supermarathon. The GeoEtnaTrail dissemination initiative is part of INGV's scientific dissemination activities aimed at communicating geophysics and scientific and technological research connected to the monitoring and surveillance of volcanoes to the outside world. For the occasion, a poster was created using augmented reality technologies and distributed to all the athletes, which describes the historical eruptions, volcanic bodies and geological structures on a 1:50.000 scale "Geological Map of the Etna Volcano". greater awareness of the territory and prevention of natural risks. The wonders of the Etna volcano were also illustrated, which since 2013 has been included among the natural sites of the World Heritage.
