The event is part of the events of the XNUMXth edition of the National Civil Protection Week promoted by the National Department of Civil Protection and sees, among others, the participation of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
The aim of the exercise is to focus on the action priorities of the overall risk planning process following an earthquake and a possible subsequent tsunami wave, to increase awareness of territorial risks and resilience.
During the exercise, an earthquake with Richter magnitude 6.3 and intensity IX on the Mercalli scale will be simulated in the city of Messina, followed by a tsunami, in order to determine and verify, through the homogenization of procedures and languages, the coordinated use of the structures operational taking into account the vulnerability of buildings, infrastructures and networks for the provision of essential services.
Following the simulated earthquake, the INGV communicates the parameters of the event to the DPC in terms of location, magnitude and depth of the hypocentre.
In addition, the scientific-institutional conference "Science and Civil Protection: from knowledge of risks to prevention" will be held on Friday 14 October at the Aula Magna of the University of Messina. Among the speakers, the Director of the INGV Etna Observatory Stefano Branca.
