One hundred years after the devastating earthquake that struck Monterchi and the Valtiberina on 26 April 1917, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) participates in the conference for the centenary of the earthquake, organized by the Municipality of Monterchi and the Alta Valtiberina Toscana Seismic Laboratory ( Lab.Si).
The proceedings will begin at the Istituto Statale Comprensivo Scolastico of the Municipality of Monterchi and will take place on 26, 27 and 28 April.
The INGV experts will give speeches in the session on 26 April dedicated to Geodynamics and Seismology, where they will illustrate the case of the Monterchi earthquake, present the research infrastructure TABOO (The Alto Tiberina Near Fault Observatory), the results of the seismic analysis on the Alto Tiberina fault , the relationship between human activities and seismicity in Valtiberina and the contribution of local geology and morphology to ground shaking.
During the following days we will discuss about seismic danger, vulnerability and risk, the evolution of design in seismic areas, historic buildings and the Lab.Si experience.
The three days will be an important opportunity for discussion to take stock of knowledge and the impact of the earthquake, in the light of current scientific know-how.
The meeting will close with a round table on earthquake emergency management and seismic prevention.
