The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and National Research Council (CNR) they just posted the video “The Power of Words”, a real practical and impactful guide to raise awareness of using the simple inclusive solutions that the Italian language offers.
Italian, in fact, has everything needed to respectfully identify people. But people don't always use the language appropriately, fueling discrimination and inequality with their words.
The initiative is promoted in the month in which the initiatives on women's rights occur. INGV's Single Guarantee Committee for Equal Opportunities, Worker Well-Being, and Anti-Discrimination (CUG-INGV) and from Center for Scientific Communication and Dissemination Services (CSCDS-INGV), In collaboration with the CNR Gender Equality Team (CNR-GET).
The video draws inspiration from Guidelines on gender-inclusive language developed in 2024 by the CNR and is part of the Gender Equality actions foreseen by the INGV Three-Year Activity Plan 2025-2027. The implementation was managed by the Bologna-based company Nowhere in collaboration with a group of researchers and technologists from the two research institutes.
“Titles like 'secretary' or 'clerk' are commonly used, while there is still some resistance to using terms like 'researcher' or 'rector', which refer to professions historically held by men, but which have no gender.”, explain the promoters. "The multimedia guide is therefore a tool available to those who, in everyday life and in the workplace, want to help overcome stereotypes and act for a more equal society.".
The video is available on the INGV YouTube channel and can be accessed from all of the Institute's social media platforms.
