Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October the Autumn Days of the Italian Environment Fund (FAI) are back, the great event dedicated to the cultural and landscape heritage of our country.
For the occasion, the Etna Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV-OE) opens the doors of the historic building which is part of the villa complex of Duke Vespasiano Trigona di Misterbianco.
The visit combines the historical-architectural side of the structure with an international-level scientific and research aspect and, in the absence of emergencies, it will be possible to visit the integrated seismic and volcanic surveillance operations room.
The architectural complex is strongly linked to the history of volcanology in Catania: in 1968, in fact, some rooms of the villa of Duke Vespasiano Trigona were the headquarters of the International Institute of Volcanological Research of the CNR which, in 1970 became the 'International Institute of Volcanology'. Subsequently, in 1989, the institute found its headquarters in the adjacent villa of Duke Salvatore Trigona. Today, that research center is the INGV Etna Observatory and the house, acquired in 2007, is part of the INGV heritage.
The route involves the use of stairs.
