Through memories and testimonies, the INGV retraces the 1980 earthquake, highlighting the importance of historical memory and prevention

On November 23, 1980, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the southern Apennines, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Irpinia and Basilicata. Forty-five years after that tragic event, The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) is proposing a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening the culture of prevention through historical memory.

Between these, the creation of the first Map of Memories of Italian Earthquakes, thanks to the contribution of those who have directly or indirectly experienced an earthquake. The INGV Earthquake Department has launched the Call to Action "Guardians of Memory", inviting users to share photos of objects that have become "treasure chests" of historical memory or to tell their memories through the INGVterremoti social channels or by filling out a dedicated form.

Collecting and leveraging the experiences of the Irpinia earthquake remains an important goal for INGV. The Story Map "That Sunday evening” offers an interactive experience that integrates different types of archive material, such as special news broadcasts, documents retracing the earthquake's geological complexity or the state of seismic monitoring at the time, geolocated photographs, and interactive maps to view the effects on the affected areas. Ample space is also dedicated to the earthquake's social and economic impact, reflections on reconstruction, and the personal stories of survivors.

The Story Map enriches the information already present in the portal earthquake80, through which Visitors can embark on a virtual journey inspired by three key words: science, memory, and testimony. There are many sources of in-depth information available, from photo galleries to interviews, up to scientific articles taken from the blog-magazine INGV earthquakes and the INGV documentary “Irpinia80 – Journey to the Land that Resists”Through the words, memories, and emotions of citizens, institutions, and scientists, the documentary retraces the earthquake and how it affected their lives, as well as the steps taken by the National Seismic Surveillance Service, seismologists, and the Civil Protection System after that tragic event.

Finally, a scientific speed date will be held on November 24th in Grottaminarda (Avellino) starting at 18:30 PM at the "La Posta" winery. The event is part of Sirene_Irpinia1980, a multidisciplinary project developed by INGV and CNR-IGAG in 24 municipalities in the province of Avellino for risk reduction and emergency management.
