The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), with the collaboration of the Global Tsunami Model (GTM) and the National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), has started a scientific collaboration with An-Najah National University in order to assess the tsunami risk in Palestine in the Gaza Strip..
The agreement, which was born during the international conference of the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation, was made official during the visit to the INGV headquarters in Rome by Jamal Dabbeek, coordinator of the Earth Sciences and Earthquake Engineering Unit at the Center for Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction and professor at the Faculty of Engineering at An-Najah National University.
During an initial phase of joint work between Stefano Lorito, coordinator of the Tsunami Warning Center (CAT-INGV), and a team composed of researchers from CAT and ISPRA, Preliminary tsunami evacuation maps have been developed for the Gaza Strip. Key points of the agreement include the establishment of early warning systems and the definition of timely evacuation plans to ensure the safety of the local population.
The initiative consolidates the Palestinian university's role in reducing natural disaster risk and promotes the country's integration into international monitoring networks.
