The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) hosted a delegation from the Republic of Uzbekistan at its headquarters in Rome to launch a new and strategic scientific collaboration between the two countries.
During the meeting, the President of INGV, Fabio Florindo, and the Director of the Institute of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan (IS-ASRU), Ismailov Vaxitxan Alixanovich, agreed to proceed with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). To this end, a Declaration of Intent was signed, representing the first step towards formalizing the agreement.
The initiative stems from a shared desire to strengthen scientific collaboration between Italy and Uzbekistan on the topics of seismology, seismic hazard, and natural hazard mitigation.
Future collaboration will focus on research and development activities dedicated to the identification and characterization of active and potentially seismic faults, the study of local seismic response in urban areas and contexts affected by strategic infrastructure, as well as the protection of artistic and cultural heritage from natural hazards.
The agreement also aims to promote joint research activities, the development of joint projects, the exchange of skills and knowledge, mobility programs for researchers, training initiatives, and technical cooperation activities.
This collaboration represents an important opportunity to consolidate scientific relations between the two institutes and promote the sharing of experiences and good practices in the field of earthquake studies, seismic hazard assessment and risk reduction.
