Augusto Neri, research manager and director of the Volcanoes Structure of theIstituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), received the honorary membership of the Geological Society of America (GSA) during the 129th Annual Conference held recently in Seattle. This recognition, bestowed annually by the Council of the Geological Society of America since 1909, is awarded to international researchers who have distinguished themselves in scientific research in the Earth sciences and have promoted relations between science and society. Throughout his extensive research, Augusto Neri has focused on the development and application of physical-mathematical models of volcanic processes, with particular attention to the dynamics of multiphase gas-particle flows generated by explosive eruptions. Volcanic jets and columns, pyroclastic flows, blasts, Vulcanian eruptions, and ash dispersion have been the most studied phenomena. The models developed by Augusto Neri and his team have allowed them to estimate the hazard of active volcanoes in Italy (Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, Etna) and abroad (Mt. St. Helens, Pinatubo, Soufriere Hills Montserrat, La Soufriere de Guadeloupe, Eyjafjallajökull, Santorini, etc.) and the impact of volcanic phenomena on the region, also supporting risk mitigation efforts by civil protection authorities.
