It is operational from today the new Messina headquarters of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), located in the Aldo Moro Park, in Viale Regina Margherita.

The building, used since 1949 to house geophysical instrumentation, has recently been renovated to accommodate local data analysis and management activities acquired by the geophysical and geochemical monitoring network created within the framework of the PNRR MEET project (Monitoring Earth's Evolution and Tectonics), recently concluded.

The new INGV structure was named after Antonino Lo Surdo, a Syracusan physicist who trained academically in Messina and helped found the National Institute of Geophysics (ING, later INGV), in homage to his work in the development of geophysical research in Italy.

The Messina site is part of the INGV Etna Observatory and represents an additional hub for research, monitoring, and observation of geophysical phenomena in an area of particular scientific interest, serving as an observatory dedicated to studying the geodynamics of the Strait of Messina.
