The activity of the New South-East Crater of Etna extended into 60 events over a long period of over 6 years, most of short duration but with a notable explosive intensity, often characterized by lava fountains which in some cases exceeded 1000 m in height and eruptive columns several kilometers high. The volcano grew faster than has ever been observed. Suffice it to say that until 1911 there was only one crater on top of Etna.
