EARTHQUAKES | INGV National Seismic Network Plenary Meeting in Milan
From today until October 22nd, the Institute's experts will meet to review the state of the art of one of the Institute's most important infrastructures, capable of monitoring seismicity in real time and ensuring seismic surveillance of the national territory.

The three-day Plenary Meeting of the National Seismic Network begins today at the Milan Section of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV)., an important opportunity for technical and scientific discussion on seismic monitoring in Italy.

The meeting, organized by the network board, will be attended by researchers, technologists and technicians involved in monitoring the national territory, together with the Directors of the INGV Sections involved in the management of the Network and the Director of the Institute's Earthquake Department, Salvatore Stramondo.
La National Seismic Network, created after the 1980 Irpinia-Basilicata earthquake, is today one of the most significant infrastructures of the INGV. It allows monitor seismicity in Italy and around the world in real time and ensure the seismic surveillance service of the national territory, strategic for the national civil protection service.
The network currently includes about 500 stations installed on Italian territory, all with real-time data transmission to the Seismic Surveillance and Tsunami Warning Room of the National Earthquake Observatory (ONT) of the INGV, where a 24-hour service It is responsible for locating and calculating the magnitude of seismic events that occur in Italy and around the world. In addition to the INGV network, the Italian territorial surveillance service also includes: National Accelerometric Network of the Department of Civil Protection (DPC), the networks of other research institutions and those of various Italian universities.
"The INGV manages and develops some important research infrastructures and the National Seismic Network is today the main one: in fact, it contributes to the activities foreseen in the Three-Year Plan of Activities of the Institution (PTA) and in the National Research Plan (PNR).”, explains the Director Stramondo. "It is a specific task of the INGV and the Earthquake Department to promote its technological growth and development, so as to fulfill the monitoring tasks and the research and planning activities.".
"The Milan Plenary represents an important moment of discussion and updating on the state of the art of the National Seismic Network”, He adds Lauro Chiaraluce, Research Director of INGV and Coordinator of the Network Board. The discussion will also cover the main ongoing research projects and future development prospects, both in the field of monitoring and in that of basic scientific research.".
Finally, particular attention will be paid to the collection, management, and maintenance of seismic data, which are key aspects for ensuring the quality and continuity of the seismic surveillance service.
"The continuous improvement of the monitoring network and the integration between technological innovation and scientific research represent key elements for the advancement of knowledge on earthquakes and for the strengthening of seismic risk prevention and mitigation activities.”, agree the Directors of ONT-INGV, Lucia Margherita, and of the Milan Section of the Institute, Francesca Pacor.
