It is taking place in the Conference Room of the Rome headquarters of theNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) il international workshop “Earthquake Early Warning: Strategies for Italy”, an important moment of scientific discussion on the state of the art and on the design choices necessary to arrive at a system of early seismic warning (Earthquake Early Warning - EEW) operating in Italy.

The discussion will focus on the different possible architectures (give her “on-site”, in which the single seismic station has the ability to send an alarm message, to “network-based”, in which seismograms from multiple seismic sensors are analyzed simultaneously before raising an alarm), on network requirements and algorithms, on the metrics of performance (alert times, false alarms, missed alerts, magnitude of the “blind zone” – that is, the area in which the warning arrives later at the seismic waves of large amplitude) and on the criteria of validation.

The workshop, scheduled until tomorrow, February 18th, will see international contributions on the experiences of ShakeAlert (operational in California, Oregon and Washington) and alerts via smartphone (MyShake and Android), and the Israeli system “Truaa”.

The first day of the conference will be dedicated to oral sessions on the Italian context, international perspectives, and infrastructure enhancement. The second day will consist of two roundtable discussions: the first will discuss key decisions for implementing an EEW system in Italy; the second will discuss the potential uses of a seismic warning signal, the involvement of schools and other end users, and the legal and operational framework.
