The exhibition “Earthquakes: beware of the elements. Details that save lives ", created by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology on the occasion of the Science Festival of Genoa 2019 and now traveling with appointments scheduled in numerous cities in Italy. The aim of the exhibition was to illustrate good practices for preparing for earthquakes and to raise citizens' awareness of the fact that the Earth is a dynamic environment in continuous evolution.
The Varese exhibition, which the Municipality hosts in the Villa Baragiola headquarters, is mainly dedicated to schools, but provides for extraordinary openings for the public on the Sunday afternoons of 9, 16 and 23 February 2020.
The event involves researchers from INGV supported by the staff of the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park Authority and the GV Schiaparelli Observatory – Prealpine Geophysical Center. Furthermore, the students of some classes of the "G. Ferraris" State Scientific High School and of the Varese “F. Daverio - N. Casula - PL Nervi”, trained by INGV researchers and assisted by the staff of the AstroNatura social cooperative, will act as scientific "guide" to the exhibition.
In an interactive itinerary, visitors will discover how the different elements that make up a building react to earthquake shocks and what is the role of the land on which our houses are built. The structural elements of a building are the load-bearing parts which, if damaged, can cause it to collapse; the non-structural ones are the systems, the architectural parts - such as partition walls, panels, balconies - and the furnishings. In fact, even furnishings, if not positioned and fixed correctly, can cause injuries, obstruct escape routes and cause economic damage.
This exhibition will reveal details little known to the public and simple gestures that can make the difference in the event of an earthquake.
