Planet Earth Week CoverThe seventh edition of Planet Earth Week returns from 13 to 20 October, the scientific festival which since 2012 has confirmed itself as the main appointment with Geosciences throughout Italy.

Excursions, open doors in museums and research centres, guided tours, exhibitions, educational workshops and experiments for children and teenagers are just some of the events scheduled throughout the country.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) participates again this year in the event with a rich calendar of activities that will involve its offices in Arezzo, Catania, La Spezia and Naples.

…the events of Arezzo

An exhibition on earthquakes to investigate their causes and effects, up to their mythological interpretations and modern anti-seismic engineering techniques, accompanied by guided visits to the Paleontological Museum of Montevarchi (AR) to discover the Valdarno climate of the past through the heritage of geological and paleontological finds of the Museum: this is the program of “Between earthquakes and… Mammuthus: stories of the Earth and the territory”, the geo-event promoted by the INGV Seismological Observatory of Arezzo in collaboration with the provincial Civil Protection and the Municipality of Montevarchi.

An immersive learning adventure in which middle school students will compete in the virtual educational game "GeoQuest" in the adventure “GeoQuest Hawaii”: without leaving their desk, the children guided by the constellations will cross the ocean together with Polynesian sailors to land on Hawaii Big Island, where they will have to face wild nature and volcanic eruptions, interpreting natural phenomena thanks to local myths and legends. INGV, in collaboration with the Universities of Pavia and Camerino, will take care of the appointments in Catania and La Spezia.

…the events in Naples

The INGV Vesuvius Observatory participates in Planet Earth Week with two geo-events in Portici and Boscoreale. The first, “Vesuvius between agricultural landscapes and Bourbon sites”, organized by the Neapolitan Coordination Women in Science, will guide visitors to discover the lesser-known aspects of the Vesuvian area, such as the agronomic characteristics of the typical fruit and vegetable productions of the area and the precious artistic and architectural emergencies of the Bourbon era. In the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, however, the appointment “Archaeology and Volcanology at the Boscoreale excavations: ancient landscape and fragments of everyday life, revealed by the effects of the Vesuvian eruptions”, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBAC), the Department of Agriculture of the Federico II University and the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), will focus on multidisciplinarity to deepen the eruptive history of Somma-Vesuvius from 4000 years ago to today, investigating the effects on the territory, on man and on the ancient Roman cities affected by the eruption of 79 AD
