The Tsunami Warning Center of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (CAT-INGV) participates in the meeting for international experts promoted by the International Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG /IOTWMS) to be held in Muscat, Oman from 3 to 6 September 2019.
Established with the aim of contributing to the mitigation of the tsunami risk induced by earthquakes on the Italian and Mediterranean coasts, the CAT-INGV carries out a monitoring and warning service in the Mediterranean Sea with an intense scientific research activity on the phenomenon of tsunamis and their danger to the Italian coasts.
In the international meeting in Muscat, the expert Stefano Lorito - CAT-INGV researcher - will speak on the importance, methodologies, historical data and the current state of studies on tsunami hazards, deepening the theme of tsunami hazard assessment for local coastal community.
The main objective of the meeting is in fact to establish standards and policies based on the best scientific knowledge for the development of a unified tsunami hazard map within the UNESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) project.
The workshop in Muscat will therefore help to focus attention on the marked tsunami danger in the Makran subduction zone (MSZ), an area of convergence between the Eurasian and the Arabian plates which is highly tsunamigenic, with the particularity of being located a few kilometers from very populous.
