Andrea Bevilacqua, researcher at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), won the prestigious IAVCEI George Walker Award (International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior) delivered yesterday, February 2, 2023, during the IAVCEI Special Assembly in Rotorua, New Zealand.
The award is dedicated to the memory of Professor George Walker who with his discoveries paved the way for a modern quantitative approach to physical volcanology, significantly accelerating the understanding of volcanic processes.
It is awarded every two years to a young researcher within 7 years of obtaining his PhD.

IAVCEI is the leading international association for volcanological research, volcanic disaster mitigation and closely related disciplines, such as igneous geochemistry, petrology, geochronology, volcanogenic mineral deposits, the physics of generation and upwelling of magma in the upper mantle and in the crust.

The award was given to Andrea Bevilacqua for his research on the "dynamics and prediction of volcanic eruptions with physical-mathematical and statistical models of the phenomena". Bevilacqua's scientific achievements include “maps of eruptive vent openings, maps of invasion by pyroclastic flows, uncertainty estimation in volcanic eruption catalogs and spatio-temporal modeling of past eruptions”. Furthermore, Bevilacqua has carried out “analysis of time series of monitoring data with the aim of improving the quantitative modeling of volcanic eruption precursors” and studied “the quantification of uncertainty in models of volcanic processes with the aid of High Performance Computing, multi-model techniques, and surrogate statistical models".

After graduating in Mathematics in 2011, Andrea Bevilacqua followed the specialization course in "Mathematics for Industrial Technologies" at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, obtaining a scholarship entirely funded by INGV. After his doctorate he had the opportunity to spend a period abroad with a post-doc contract at the State University of New York, Buffalo, funded by federal funds from the National Science Foundation. In 2018 he returned to Italy, to INGV, and since August 2019 he has been a researcher at the Pisa Section.
