INGV researcher Claudio Cesaroni is the first Italian to receive the prestigious recognition

Assigned during the annual European Space Weather Week conference, currently taking place in Toulouse, le International Space Weather and Space Climate Medals.

Three medals, named after the three scientists Kristian Birkeland, Marcel Nicolet and Alexander Chizhevsky, which represent one of the highest global awards in the sector.

This year the winner of the Alexander Chizhevsky medal is the Italian Claudio Cesaroni, researcher of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in recognition of exceptional results, obtained with innovative approaches, in the field of Space Meteorology and Space Climate.

The first time this recognition has come assigned to an Italian.

“This medal, which rewards not only my work but also that of all the colleagues with whom I have the pleasure of collaborating, contributes to strengthen the strategic role of INGV in European and international initiatives concerning Space Meteorology and Space Climate", declares the newly awarded Claudio Cesaroni.

"È un important recognition for INGV's research activities which increasingly move into innovative and extremely technological fields. In the past this award has been awarded primarily to scientists working in solar physics. The study of the ionosphere has always been a central research theme of INGV. With this award comes the institute is recognized as an international protagonist in the study of the physics of the upper atmosphere honoring the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and for this I congratulate my colleague Claudio Cesaroni and the entire working group with which he collaborates”, comments the President of INGV, Prof. Carlo Doglioni.

“I would like to congratulate the scientist Claudio Cesaroni for this great result obtained in recognition of his important contribution to the study of the ionosphere. I am aware that this award comes after eight years of hard work and notable contributions made immediately after the conclusion of his PhD in Geophysics in 2015 at the University of Bologna "Alma Mater". I am pleased and proud to know that Our fellow citizen's scientific work has had a substantial impact on ionospheric research for the benefit of the international community. Thanks to Claudio Cesaroni, Italy is part of this important global scientific effort aimed at improving the light of all Nations”, says the Consul General of Italy in Marseille, Fabio Monaco.

Established in 2013, the medals are currently assigned by European Space Weather and Space Climate Association (E-SWAN) to scientists and service providers who have obtained significant results in the field of Space Meteorology and Space Climate. The committee is made up of experts from multiple countries, such as the United States, China, Japan and Europe. Over the years this initiative has become increasingly prestigious, involving Ambassadors and Research Ministers of the winning countries.
