Improve scientific research evaluation practices in order to identify researchers and organizations to promote and support, identify research proposals to be financed, promote good Open Science practices to ensure transparency, rigor, integrity, openness and collaboration between institutions. are some of the points ofAgreement on Reforming Research Assessment, the document recently signed by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). The Agreement is the result of a process launched by the European Commission at the beginning of 2021 to promote initiatives that allow for a new balance and a new interpretation of the evaluation of research results.

“INGV is the public research body that operates in the field of geosciences. Research is a key activity of the Institute and with the signing of the agreement the importance of the value of the multiplicity of products, results, practices and activities that constitute it is reaffirmed, also with reference to the maximization of its impact”, says Alessandro Carosi, contact person for INGV of the -Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment.

"We need to encourage a culture of research that values the sharing of the different contributions of science. In fact, among the commitments of the signatories of the international agreement, the use of mainly qualitative criteria for the evaluation of research is highlighted. On the other hand, the use of exclusively quantitative factors, as in the case of metrics, does not in fact allow the recognition of the full extent of the value created by researchers, constituting a limit for the best development of scientific research.” concludes Carosi.

Currently, around 432 universities, research bodies, funding bodies, evaluation agencies and research associations have signed up to the Agreement.
