Two days of meetings and comparisons on the occasion of the anniversary of the violent man earthquake of 29 June 1873 which destroyed the Belluno area

Thursday 29 and Friday 30 June, in the Sala Bianchi of the Municipality of Belluno, there will be two days of meetings and discussions with professionals and citizens.

BELLUNESE: 150 YEARS AGO EARTHQUAKE, organized by Municipality of Belluno e by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), with the collaboration of the professional Orders of Geologists, Engineers, Architects and Surveyors, is divided into two days of conference for professionals (June 29) and for citizens (June 30).

The event takes its cue from memory of the two earthquakes which have historically affected the Belluno area: that of June 29, 1873, which is the 150th anniversary, which with a magnitude of 6.3 caused destruction and damage attributable to the IX-X degree of the Mercalli-Càncani-Sieberg (MCS) Scale, also causing the loss of 80 people and the earthquake of 18 October 1936 which, with a magnitude of 6.2, caused damage of the IX degree of the MCS Scale.

In the two days the interventions of the President of INGV, prof. Carlo Doglioniand Deputy Head of the Civil Protection Department, Dr. Titti Postiglione, INGV researchers, universities, institutions, the world of professions and schools.

The two days will see the contents developed in consideration of the target audience: more specific and technical topics for the June 29 programme dedicated to professionals, day come on more popular content for June 30 dedicated to citizenship.

Earthquakes have a dramatic impact on people's lives, local economies and our extraordinary cultural heritage. They consume human lives, economic resources, cultural heritage and social cohesion in spite of a developed country like Italy, with a prestigious scientific and technical tradition in the seismic prevention sector.

This apparent contradiction has its explanation in the lack of knowledge of risks and prevention, a lack unfortunately present to varying degrees at all levels: from institutional governance to the population.

An effective response to future major earthquakes, both in terms of prevention and seismic risk education, cannot be postponed.

The memory of earthquakes, therefore, is only an opportunity to highlight that, even if we cannot predict them, we know that in the future there will be earthquakes such as those of 1873 and 1936 they will repeatIt is everyone's responsibility, scientists, politicians, technicians and - last but not least - individual citizens, to work together to minimize losses and damages.

At 4:38 local time on 29 June 1873 a very violent earthquake affected a vast area of the Belluno area with destruction and damage.

The most affected area can be located north of Lake Santa Croce, about 12 km east of Belluno. The earthquake caused widespread destruction in the Alpago basin; widespread collapses also occurred in the Treviso area and in the localities south of the Cansiglio plateau; the buildings in the Belluno-Pordenone-Conegliano Veneto triangle area suffered serious damage. The most important center among those damaged was Belluno.
