INGV expresses deep condolences for the passing of Dimitri Gidaspow, Distinguished Professor of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. In his long career, Dimitri Gidaspow has made fundamental contributions to computational fluid dynamics and in particular to the study of the behavior of multiphase mixtures (gas-liquid-solid). His innovative theories on the physics of multiphase flows have allowed radical progress in many engineering applications but also in the study of volcanic processes, in particular in the numerical modeling of pyroclastic flows and their hazards. The Institute is honored and grateful to have been able to benefit from his teaching and his collaboration for over 25 years in the context of its volcanological research. The Institute expresses its deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the IIT.
