Registration is open to participate in the network schools dedicated to young volcanologists to be held at the Krafla volcano in Iceland and at Etna in Italy.

The activities are part of the MSCA-ETN IMPROVE (Innovative Multi-Discipline European Research training network on VolcanoEs) project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. In detail, it is a Marie Curie network of which the The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) is coordinator, which includes nine academic partners and three industrial partners, from seven European countries.

“MSCA-ETN IMPROVE”, explains Paolo Papale, INGV volcanologist and project coordinator, “aims to train the new generation of volcanologists, with broad overviews and high-level skills, in order to convert their knowledge, ideas and skills into scientific advances, maintaining strong links with the industrial world and considering the social implications. In particular, the objective of the project is the advanced training of fifteen young researchers on the themes and methods of quantitative volcanology”.

"THEand two volcanic areas that will host these first two IMPROVE schools”Papal adds, “provide ideal cases for scientific advancement and education through field research: Etna, Sicily, is one of the most monitored volcanoes in the world is the ideal place to broaden understanding of the dynamics of active volcanoes, while the caldera of Krafla volcano, Iceland, is home to a large geothermal circulation system widely exploited for energy production, and a shallow magma intrusion that is catalyzing groundbreaking research from around the world.

The schools are aimed at PhD researchers and Post-PhD students.

IMPROVE project: two network schools in Iceland and Italy dedicated to young volcanologists

Registration is open to participate in the network schools dedicated to young volcanologists. They will be held at the Krafla volcano, in Iceland, and at Etna in Italy.

The activities are part of the MSCA-ETN IMPROVE (Innovative Multi-Discipline European Research training network on VolcanoEs) project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Framework Program. "MSCA-ETN IMPROVE", explains Paolo Papale, INGV volcanologist and project coordinator, "aims to train the new generation of volcanologists, with broad views and high-level skills, in order to convert their knowledge, ideas and skills into scientific advances, maintaining strong links with the industrial world and considering the social impacts related to volcanic hazards. In particular, the goal of the project is the advanced training of fifteen young researchers on the topics and methods of quantitative volcanology”.

"The two volcanic areas that will host these first two schools of IMPROVE”, Papale adds, “provide ideal cases for scientific advancement and training through field research: Etna, in Sicily, is one of the most monitored volcanoes in the world and the ideal place to expand understanding of the dynamics of active volcanoes, while the caldera of Krafla in Iceland is home to a large geothermal circulation system widely exploited for energy production, and a shallow magma intrusion which is catalyzing revolutionary research from all over the world”.

The schools are aimed at PhD researchers and Post-PhD students.
