November 5 is the day chosen by the United Nations General Assembly as World Tsunami Awareness Day (World Tsunami Awareness Day – WTAD).

The General Assembly called on all member states, the United Nations system, international and regional organizations and civil society to observe the WTAD annually and to raise awareness of the risk posed by tsunamis.

To celebrate the Day, researchers from the INGV Tsunami Alert Center (CAT-INGV) will carry out various multidisciplinary activities:

  • aexercise promoted by ChEESE project to show the potential ofHigh-Performance Computing applied to probabilistic prediction of tsunami hazards. In particular, we will test Urgent Computing, an indispensable tool for quick post-event evaluation (Rapid Post Event Assessment).
  • la story map "Traveling among the tidal waves of the Mediterranean Sea. From 365 AD to today: an interactive journey to tell the story of the tsunamis that occurred in the Mediterranean Sea”. Through photos, videos, texts and interactive links, the historical tsunamis and the more recent ones that occurred in the Mediterranean Sea are retraced.
  • un video lesson unpublished by the Municipality of Minturno (LT) engaged since last year for the recognition of "Tsunami Ready" communities, a UNESCO program aimed at encouraging preparedness for tsunami risk.
  • aexercise organized by the Civil Protection of Malta in collaboration with the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Union. The CAT will send the alert messages for a tsunamigenic seismic event, taking as a reference the scenario of the NEAMWave21 exercise (an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 in the Ionian Sea).

The activities will involve many countries in the Mediterranean area, the Tsunami Service Providers of the ICG/NEAMTWS active in the eastern Mediterranean: Greece, Italy, Turkey and the civil protection authorities, including the Italian national department which contributed to the development of the Tsunami Alert Center of INGV.

The World Tsunami Awareness Day

Six years ago, the United Nations General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day – WTAD.

The General Assembly invited all Member States, the United Nations system, international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, to observe WTAD each year and raise awareness of the risk posed by tsunamis.

To celebrate the Day, the INGV Tsunami Alert Center (CAT-INGV) researchers will carry out various multidisciplinary activities:

  • an exercise by the CHEESE project to show the potential of High-Performance Computing applied to probabilistic hazard forecasts - in this specific case to the tsunami hazard - and in particular to Urgent Computing, essential to the Rapid Post Event Assessment.
  • The story map: "A journey through the tsunamis of the Mediterranean Sea. From 365 AD to today: an interactive path to tell the tsunamis occurred in the Mediterranean Sea". Through photos, videos, texts and interactive links, you can discover the historical and more recent tsunamis occurred in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • A new video lesson from the Municipality of Minturno (Italy), involved since last year in applying to become a "Tsunami Ready" community, a UNESCO program to promote tsunami risk preparedness, will be published.
  • The CAT-INGV will also participate in the exercise organized by the Malta Civil Protection in collaboration with the European Union's Joint Research Center (JRC). The CAT will provide the alert messaging for a tsunamigenic seismic event, taking as reference the scenario of the exercise NEAMWave21 (an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 in the Ionian Sea).

The activities will involve many countries of the Mediterranean area, the Tsunami Service Providers of the ICG/NEAMTWS active in the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Italy, Turkey), and the Civil Protection authorities, including the Italian National Department that has contributed in recent years to the development of the Tsunami Warning Center of INGV.
