The book intended for the dissemination of knowledge of two natural events that affect our territory and which are the subject of INGV's surveillance and monitoring activities returns, with new contents and a new graphic design.

From 4 June, the book Earthquakes and Maremoti. How to know them and reduce the risks, published by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), will be available on the INGV website and on the INGVterremoti blog.

Completely renewed in content and graphics, the text saw its first edition in 2008.

Today, INGV researchers wanted to redesign the popular message by inserting original information, the result of scientific elaboration on earthquakes and tsunamis of the last decade.

Earthquakes and Tsunamis. How to know them and reduce the risks, in fact, is a journey to discover these fascinating and, at the same time, fearsome natural phenomena, in order to understand together the processes that determine them and focusing on the constant seismic surveillance and level monitoring activities of the sea.

- Why and where do earthquakes and tidal waves occur?

- How are they measured?

- Which ones were the strongest in Italy and in the world?

- What is the danger of our territory and our coasts?

- How can we defend ourselves?

These are the questions that all those who have directly or indirectly experienced a seismic event have asked themselves at least once.

Forty years after the Irpinia earthquake of 23 November 1980, this volume, in its updated and enriched form, aims to offer answers to readers and make a contribution to the path of awareness of the territory of the risks of the territory in which we live, for the necessary culture of prevention that must be instilled in every citizen, also and above all starting from the new generations.

The book consists of two parts. The first part describes the earthquakes that have affected our area in the last 20 years, highlighting the communication tools created by the INGVterremoti group since 2010 and aimed at informing the public in detail about ongoing seismicity, in real time. The second part describes the phenomenon of tsunamis by addressing their danger to the Italian coasts and in the Mediterranean, with a focus on the INGV Tsunami Alert Center which, operational since 2017, carries out the constant monitoring service of earthquakes in the Mediterranean Sea, of of the sea and tsunami warning.

The book, whose contents and graphics are entirely edited by INGV, is part of the Institute's new activity as a publisher of popular works.

Earthquakes and Tsunamis. How to know them and reduce the risks can be browsed and downloaded on the INGV website in the Educational pages (INGV.it ->Communication and Dissemination ->Educational) and on the INGVterremoti blog.

The printed version will be distributed to schools on future visits to the Institute's premises. Furthermore, within the limits of the copies available, it will be distributed to the public at institutional events.

On Friday 4 June the book will be presented to the public with a streaming event on the INGV Eventi YouTube channel, starting at 9:00, in collaboration with a school in Rome.
