The official website of SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 (Sea Level Rise Scenarios along the Mediterranean Coasts-2), the second operational phase of the European Project SAVEMEDCOASTS inaugurated in December last year, is online.
The project, coordinated by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and financed by the Directorate General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid of the European Union (DG-ECHO), aims to prevent the effects of the increase sea level expected by 2100 due to climate change and to support coastal populations that will have to cope with this phenomenon.
In particular, SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 will focus on the study of some of the main river deltas and lagoon areas of the Mediterranean, where natural and anthropogenic subsidence accelerates the effects of sea advance, with consequent greater risks of submerging high natural and economic value.
Future scenarios of sea level rise in the coming decades are essential for understanding the associated risks so that the population and political subjects are ready to face these changes also through targeted awareness and education campaigns.
The new SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 website is therefore proposed both as an active dissemination tool and as a preferential channel of information for citizens and stakeholders on the activities of the Project and on the phenomenon of sea level rise and its effects connected.
The site contains sections dedicated to the local communities of the Mediterranean area involved in the Project. The web pages are available in English, Italian, Spanish and Greek.
