The Director of the Volcanoes Department of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Augusto Neri, has been nominated a member of the 2020 Class of Fellows of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). The award was presented during the Annual Conference (online). The AGU is a leading organization of geoscience scholars with over 62.000 members from 144 countries.

The prestigious nomination is given for outstanding scientific contributions in the Earth and Space Sciences made through discoveries or innovations in their disciplines. Since 1962, less than 0,1% of AGU members have joined this renowned group.

Augusto Neri was also awarded the 2020 Gilbert F. White Distinguished Award and Lecture by the Natural Risks Section of the same AGU.
Augusto Neri concentrated his research activity on the development and application of physical-mathematical models of volcanic processes, with particular attention to the dynamics of explosive eruptions. The most studied phenomena have been volcanic columns and jets, pyroclastic flows, blasts, Vulcan eruptions, ash dispersion and magma ascent in volcanic conduits. Together with his collaborators, Augusto Neri has also developed quantitative models that have been applied to the estimation of the danger of both Italian (Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, Etna, Stromboli) and foreign (Mt.St.Helens, Soufriére Hills Montserrat, La Soufriére of Guadeloupe, Eyjafjallajokull, Santorini, etc.), as well as used to estimate the impact of volcanic phenomena to support risk mitigation actions.

Graduated in Chemical Engineering at the University of Pisa, he obtained his PhD at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. After having carried out studies at the National Institute of Geophysics, the University of Pisa, and the National Research Council (CNR), he was Senior Researcher at the CNR of Pisa and since 2003 he has been Research Director in Volcanism Physics at the INGV.
