INGV launches the EMERSITO website, to offer information and insights on the effects of local amplification of seismic motion

The website of the Emergency Operations Group "EMERSITO" (http://emersitoweb.rm.ingv.it) of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) is online.

The objective of the new portal is to raise awareness of the Group's activities, making the public aware of the issue of seismic danger and highlighting, in particular, the effect that the type of surface soil produces on seismic motion. In fact, during the propagation of seismic waves from the source to the surface, and in particular when crossing more superficial terrain, these waves can undergo a transformation which often translates into an increase in the amplitude and duration of the shaking, but also in a variation of the frequency content of the signal.

EMERSITO is an Operational Group made up of INGV researchers, technologists and technicians from ten different locations (Bologna, Catania, Grottaminarda, L'Aquila, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Pisa, Rende and Rome). The Group intervenes in the event of earthquakes in Italy of significant magnitude (M >5) or in the event that a level of damage is observed that cannot be attributed solely to the energy of the seismic event.

During emergencies, EMERSITO carries out monitoring campaigns for local seismic response studies in order to evaluate the changes that the seismic motion recorded on the surface undergoes due to the geological, geotechnical and morphological properties of the site in question. The Operational Group also carries out preparatory activities for seismic microzonation, in which geophysical measurements are carried out for the characterization of surface soils and seismic networks are installed in the epicentral area to contribute to the definition of homogeneous areas in terms of seismic hazard.

The EMERSITO website, divided into various sections, provides information and insights on site effects and microzoning activities, also describing the seismic emergencies in which EMERSITO has taken part over the years: among these, L'Aquila (2009), Emilia-Romagna (2012), Central Italy (2016) and Ischia (2017).

In all these events, cases have been observed in which the geological and morphological structures have contributed to amplifying the seismic motion recorded on the surface, generating an increase in surface shaking which may have contributed, together with other no less important factors linked to the vulnerability of existing buildings and infrastructure, to the observed damage.

In addition to providing information on the emergency campaigns carried out, with the related reports and scientific publications, the site offers a multimedia section where it is possible to find informative photos and videos on the Group's work.
