The historical memory and intangible heritage of the catastrophic event that led to the destruction of the city of Mascali collected in fifteen essays, the result of the commemorative conferences organized for the 90th anniversary of the 1928 eruption

The presentation of the volume will be held on Friday 17 July in Piazza Duomo in Mascali (CT). “Etna 1928-2018, 90 years after the eruption and the reconstruction of Mascali”.

The event will take place in the presence of the President of the Sicilian Region, Hon. Nello Musumeci, and will see the participation, among others, of the Director of the Etna Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (OE-INGV), Stefano Branca, and the Mayor of the Municipality of Mascali, Luigi Messina.

The collection of essays, created with the contribution of INGV, the Sicilian Region and the Municipality of Mascali, traces the multidisciplinary presentations of the conferences organized in 2018 on the occasion of the celebrations of the 90th anniversary of the eruption.

The lateral eruption of Etna in 1928, which began on 2 November, was the main eruptive event of the 1.200th century, as well as the only one, from the 9th century to today, to cause the destruction of a town on the slopes of the Sicilian volcano. In fact, in just seventeen days, a lava flow escaping from an eruptive fissure which opened on the north-eastern flank of the volcano, at an altitude of XNUMX metres, covered a good XNUMX kilometers, erasing the ancient city of Mascali from the topographical maps, once the main center of the homonymous and economically thriving county subject to the bishop of Catania.

In 2018, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the eruption, the Municipality of Mascali, in collaboration with the Sicilian Region, the INGV Etna Observatory, the Superintendency for Cultural Heritage of Catania, the "Mascali" Comprehensive Institute and the Cultural Association "Mascali 1928", wanted to recover the historical memory and the intangible heritage of that event to reach as wide an audience as possible, also through cultural and scientific activities.

With fifteen essays edited by experts and researchers, the volume “Etna 1928-2018, 90 years after the eruption and the reconstruction of Mascali” aims to preserve the memory and value of a historical natural event unchanged over time, which has forever changed the face of that territory and laying the foundations for a reconstruction work that has been able to preserve, partly by innovating them, the features of the More authentic Sicily.
