The earthquake of 23 June 2019 in the province of Rome occurred in an area not new to seismic phenomena; INGV seismologists trace its seismic history since 1700 and briefly illustrate its geology.
On 23 June 2019, at 22.43 pm Italian time, a seismic event of magnitude Mw 3.6 (Ml 3.7) shook the earth from Rome to Gaeta. Furthermore, only two other small seismic events were recorded by the seismometers, both of magnitude 1.4, at 23:06 and 01:23 on 24 June.
This event occurred on the northern edge of the Colli Albani volcanic complex, in an area with historically moderate level seismic activity. By analyzing the seismic history of the area over the last 300 years, together with other data collected, the INGV seismologists have developed an initial analysis of what happened, returning a photograph of the pre-Apennine area close to the city of Rome.
