Yesterday, at the General Command of the Carabinieri, the General Commander CA Giovanni Nistri and the President of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) Prof. Carlo Doglioni signed the Memorandum of Understanding which begins a close collaboration between ARMA and INGV, both operational structures of the National Civil Protection Service.
With a duration of ten years, the Protocol is aimed at strengthening the National Seismic Network (RSN) for Seismic Surveillance and Civil Protection purposes, activities of extreme importance for National Public Security.
In fact, INGV, through the expertise of its National Earthquake Observatory (INGV-ONT), will create a series of monitoring stations with high safety and reliability standards, able to improve, where necessary, the characteristics of the current Seismic Network National with particular regard to the main population centres.
ARMA will facilitate the installation of seismic stations for seismic, volcanic and environmental monitoring and surveillance within its barracks scattered throughout the country, manned 24 hours a day and located in strategic positions such as to guarantee optimal coverage of the territory. These sites will become new nodes of the National Seismic Network, hosting stations that INGV-ONT personnel will install with the logistical support of ARMA personnel.
The monitoring stations of the Network will be equipped with sensors for monitoring seismic phenomena, such as velocimeters/accelerometers, or any other sensors of interest for the planned activities.
The implementation of the Network will make it possible to improve the seismic and volcanic monitoring activities on the national territory, increasing the number and quality of the stations, guaranteeing, in the event of significant variations in seismicity or in the event of a declaration of a state of emergency, optimal surveillance and the ability to intervene throughout the national territory.
