Next Friday 24 May, starting at 11.00, in the Conference Room of the Rome branch of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) the comic strip "Mallet's vision" will be presented, created by the Lucan Group of Civil Protection in collaboration with Graziano Ferrari, INGV researcher, and thanks to the expert hand of the cartoonist from Basilicata Giuseppe Palumbo.
Robert Mallet, considered the father of seismology, was a polymath Irish engineer. His study of earthquakes materialized in 1846 when he presented his theory on the dynamics of earthquakes, On the dynamics of earthquakes, to the Royal Irish Academy, which constitutes the first attempt to include seismic phenomena in the field of exact sciences. Following the very strong Lucan earthquake that hit southern Italy on 16 December 1857, causing about 19.000 victims, Mallet managed to get financed by the Royal Society of London for a trip to the Italian earthquake zones in order to experimentally verify his theory.
The Lucan Civil Protection Group, the main organization of civil protection volunteers in southern Italy, has promoted (with the support of the Fondazione con il Sud) the dissemination of Mallet's story in the form of a comic strip, in an original experience of synergy between sequential science and art. The aim of the initiative is to make young people and families aware of volunteering issues and good resilience practices.
The presentation of the volume will take place in the presence of the Irish ambassador to Italy, Colm Ó Floinn, the President of the Lucano Group of Civil Protection, Giuseppe Priore, and the cartoonist Giuseppe Palumbo.
