Also this year the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) will participate in the XNUMXth edition of the "Science and Philosophy Festival - Virtue and Canoscenza" in Foligno, whose theme will be "Evoking the world: the exploration of reality".
The Festival, organized by the Laboratory of Experimental Sciences - Onlus, by the Municipality of Foligno and by the Oicos reflections association, in collaboration with the Umbria Region, will be held from 11 to 14 April 2019 under the patronage of INGV and the major public bodies of research.
The experts present at the Fest will involve non-experts by addressing usually very specific topics with the general public: science, technology and philosophy will therefore help to explore together the reality that surrounds us and the possible future scenarios that await humanity.
The INGV researchers, in particular, will talk about the study of geophysical phenomena such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, and will explain how these events affect everyone's lives and emotions, going so far as to change the very way in which our cities are built .

The Earth takes selfies: measuring, from space, how and how much the earth's surface moves. Earthquakes and more (edited by Carlo Alberto Brunori)
The earth's surface moves, from a few millimeters a year up to a few meters in seconds, changing heights, the shapes of the continents and the depths of the oceans. Plains and mountains change their shapes all the time. In the last 20 years, in Colfiorito di Foligno, in L'Aquila, in the Po Valley and in Central Italy, seismic events have changed the appearance of the landscape. Thanks to aerospace techniques it is possible to say, with centimeter precision, how much and how these movements take place.

Etna 1669-2019. Stories of eruptions and men (edited by Stefano Branca)
During the millennial history of the relationship between eruptions and human activity, two events have particularly marked the Etna area and its civilization process. The eruptions of 1669 and 1928 have in fact dramatically affected the urban fabric, interweaving stories of populations, faith, science, reconstruction and rebirth. These events summarize the man-volcano relationship, a relationship altered by a recent unregulated urban development that sometimes underestimates the history of one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

What is perception. Natural risks between perception and reality (edited by Massimo Crescimbene)
Brief history of studies on risk perception and perception, with a focus on the perception of seismic and tsunami risk in our country and on the comparison between risk and perception of events.

Reading earthquakes: geological layers like pages of a book (edited by Daniela Pantosti)
The earthquakes of the past tell us about the seismicity of the future. The historical and instrumental catalogs show the locations of strong earthquakes, but this is not sufficient to describe the evolution of seismicity over time, especially for large events. The reading of the geological strata reveals earthquakes which also occurred in prehistoric times through the use of many methods and disciplines which, intertwining, help us in this difficult undertaking.
