In the night between 5 and 6 April 2009, at 3.32 am, an earthquake with a magnitude greater than 6 tragically struck a vast area in the province of L'Aquila. That event was followed by many aftershocks, even of magnitude greater than 5, and nearly 20.000 earthquakes were located in the area.
Ten years later, the INGVterremoti blog created a story map on the spatio-temporal trend of the sequence throughout the year 2009, where approximately 6.700 seismic events of magnitude greater than 1.6 are displayed.
The "story map" is a web application that INGV uses through interactive maps, multimedia contents and interaction functions in order to improve information, teaching and communication also of natural phenomena such as seismicity. Thanks to the interaction tools and the info-graphic functions present in the application interface, it is possible to obtain information on the number of events and the maximum magnitude on the map, query each single earthquake to view its hypocentral parameters, select the seismic events of the various periods of the sequence (time phases) or according to their magnitude. Finally, by activating the time cursor, it will be possible to view the earthquakes in a given time interval and start an animation, day by day, of the seismic activity.
