World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD), organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) following the indications of the Sendai protocol 5-2015, is celebrated again this year on November 2030th. The term tsunami comes from the Japanese (津波 = port wave) and is a synonym of the Italian word maremoto. Tsunamis are rare events, but with enormous destructive potential, as explained in the video prepared by UNISDR for the event.
Over the past 100 years, more than 260.000 people have died in 59 different tsunamis. With an average of 4.600 victims per disaster, the toll exceeded that of any natural disaster. Tsunamis, however, know no borders, making international cooperation the key to a deep political and public understanding of risk reduction measures.
