90 years after the eruption that destroyed Mascali, the Etna Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (OE – INGV), in collaboration with the municipality of Mascali, the Tuscan Photographic Archive (AFT) and the “Mascali 1928” presents a photo-cartographic exhibition and a conference on the eruptive event that hit the town on the lower eastern side of Etna, buried by a lava flow between 6 and 7 November 1928,

The itinerant photo-cartographic exhibition "Etna 4. The destruction of Mascali" will be inaugurated on Sunday 18.30 November at 1928 at the former Kindergarten Rosa Maltoni – Maria Ausiliatrice, (Piazza VI novembre, Mascali). The exhibition aims to retrace the places devastated by the tragedy that wiped out a part of the Etna area with a thousand-year history in just a few days. Starting from scientific research data, the exhibition illustrates the various phases of the eruption and the main moments of the lava flow's progress through maps and photographs of the places seen from the ground and from the sky, through the stories of the main Italian and foreign weeklies, with most significant moments of the films of the cameramen of the time proposed in Augmented Reality.

Saturday 10 November the appointment is at 16.00, at the Cathedral of Mascali, with the conference "The eruption of Etna in 1928 between volcanology, history and artistic suggestion". In the presence of the authorities, the INGV experts will speak who will illustrate the volcanological characteristics of the 1928 eruption and the impact it had on the population and on the territory also through the description of the studies carried out by the directors of the Vesuvius Observatory in those years on Etna . During the conference we will also talk about how the media of the time reported the days of the destruction of Mascali and, afterwards, the story La casa nella lava will be screened.
