On Friday 21 September, at 16.00, at the headquarters of the University of Calabria in Arcavacata di Rende (CS) on the occasion of the closing day of the 104th National Congress of the SIF - Italian Physical Society, the round table will be held Earthquakes and tsunamis: is Calabria the most dangerous region in Italy? Scientific assessments and defense systems.

The appointment aims to take stock of the knowledge of the danger from earthquakes and tsunamis in Calabria and on the risk mitigation actions undertaken by the civil protection system.

Due to its geographical position and the geological processes that affect it, throughout history the territory of Calabria has been hit several times by both large earthquakes and tsunamis. In addition to the Reggio – Messina earthquake of 1908 and the consequent tsunami, numerous other similar events have been recorded over the centuries, including the earthquake in Southern Calabria of 5 February 1783, and the tsunami of the following day, which caused more than 26.000 victims.

The round table will be moderated by Marco Cattaneo (Director of Le Scienze and National Geographic). Speakers will include Prof. Gino Mirocle Crisci (Rector of the University of Calabria, UniCal), Prof. Luisa Cifarelli (President of SIF), Vincenzo Carbone (Director of the UniCal Physics Department). Carlo Meletti (Seismic Hazard Center of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology INGV) and Alessandro Amato (Tsunami Alert Center INGV) will take stock of scientific knowledge, while Luigi D'Angelo (Department of National Civil Protection) and Carlo Tansi (Civil Protection Region of Calabria) will illustrate the activities of the national and regional system of Civil Protection.
