From Wednesday 5th to Thursday 20th February 2025 the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) invites you to participate in the 6th edition of “Words for the Earth”, the event that involves various branches of the Institute throughout the country.
The event is one of those organized to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of INGV and is included among the events of the STEM Week, the national week of scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical disciplines promoted by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR).
Volcanologists, seismologists and environmental experts will accompany the public on a journey to discover our planet, with interactive activities, speed date and scientific aperitifs, innovative technologies, educational workshops and games to tell the latest scientific discoveries.
The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness among visitors about Geosciences and discover together how much we can do to mitigate seismic and volcanic risk and to safeguard our Home.
INGV researchers are waiting for you: find out below the appointment closest to you or read , here the complete program.

from 09:30 to 14:00 (reserved for schools)
from 14pm to 30pm (open to public)

- Il laboratory "SassoLab” is a theoretical-experiential activity aimed at students in the last year of middle school. The children, who will be asked to bring to the museum a "stone" collected on vacation or in the garden of their home, through observations and small experiments and with the help of an identification card and a geologist, will "read" what the rocks tell, and, acquiring simple but rigorous scientific concepts, will classify those "stones" as rocks belonging to the three macro categories.
- THEorganisers' activities “GEO Detective” is aimed at second-year students of secondary school. Through an investigation supported by a story and dichotomous cards, the students guided by experts will have to trace the identikit of a rock and then recognize it through an "American-style comparison".
Visit to the Vesuvian Minerals Collection of the Historical Headquarters of the INGV: Students will have the opportunity to learn about the different environments of formation of Vesuvian rocks and minerals that tell the story of the volcanic activity of Somma Vesuvius.
Afternoon:
Scientific coffee with an informal meeting with researchers from the Vesuvius Observatory who, taking inspiration from the rocks as words of the Earth, answer visitors' questions on all the curiosities they want to share about volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, bradyseism, monitoring and other geological topics, welcoming visitors among the rooms of the Museum, in each of which a specific topic will be discussed.
