A volume published by INGV tells the story of the impact that the “Muntagna” has had over the centuries on the transformation of the Aci territory through science, history and culture

 

Next will be held Saturday 8 February, starting at 11:00 at the Press Room of the City of Acireale (CT), the book presentation “Etna redraws the territory of Aci - June 28, 1329”, published byNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).

The volume, born from a project of theBasaltika Cultural Association and sponsored by City of AcirealeDepartment of Tourism, Sport and Entertainment of the Sicilian RegionSicilian Regional Assembly e Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of the Zelanti and Dafnici, was edited by Oriana Tobacco, President of Basaltika, and Stephen Branca, Director of the Etna Observatory of the INGV.

“The Basaltika Cultural Association has asked scientific operators, historians and artists to become witnesses of a time that has never passed, for the purpose of a more careful and capable awareness of our Sicilian excellences starting from the knowledge of our origins. A careful and targeted focus that touches the scientific and emotional sphere of the Etna volcano, which over the centuries has determined in every way its presence on the territory, today a destination for enthusiasts and researchers”, explains the President Tobacco.

“The project 'Etna redraws the territory of Aci', launched last October, has collected scientific, historical and cultural data with the aim of telling the story through the eruptions that, over the centuries, have determined the development, transformations and identity of the territory of Aci, the nine Municipalities united - in addition to the relationship with the volcano - by the prefix in their name: a lush and fertile territory, already chosen by both the Greeks and the Romans for its peculiarities”, adds the Director White

The book presentation will be introduced by institutional greetings from Mayor of Acireale, Roberto Barbagallo, and will see the participation of the curators of the volume, the authors of the texts that tell the historical and anthropological part and the artists who, with the contemporary art exhibition “Dreaming Awake - The Resilience of Art” exhibited in recent months at the Bellini Theater in Acireale, have translated the explosive energy of the Etna volcano into works.
