A year of extraordinary events is underway to tell the story of the Institute's research on Planet Earth and its activities that have always been at the service of society

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of its establishment with a series of events that will take place until June 2025.

The celebrations will be inaugurated on October 7, 2024 - from 14:30 p.m. - with an institutional day at the Senate of the Republic, in the presence of Ministers and other authorities, as well as the most important figures who participated in the birth of INGV.

The institutional greetings of Senator Quaestor Antonio De Poli will be followed by a video message from the Minister of University and Research Anna Maria Bernini and speeches by Carlo Doglioni, President of INGV, Nello Musumeci, Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, Gianni Letta, former Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Ortensio Zecchino, former Minister of University and Scientific and Technological Research, Franco Barberi, former Head of the Civil Protection Department, Fabio Ciciliano, Head of the Civil Protection Department, Luigi Ferrara, Head of the Casa Italia Department, Massimo Chiappini, Director of the INGV Environment Department, Claudio Chiarabba, Director of the INGV Earthquakes Department, and Francesca Bianco, Director of the INGV Volcanoes Department.

The institutional day at the Senate aims to represent the main focus of a journey that, in this first quarter of a century, has seen the INGV become a world reference point in scientific research on the study of Planet Earth.

The event will be an opportunity to reflect on the progress made by the Institute in the field of seismic and volcanic research and monitoring, forecasting and prevention of natural risks, studies in the environmental sector and scientific dissemination. In addition, the large Earth Telescope project that projects INGV research into the future will be presented to the public.

The celebrations will continue in Catania the following day, October 8, 2024 - from 15:00 pm - at the INGV Etna Observatory, with the event "25 years of Geosciences for Society", in the presence of the Authorities of the Sicilian Region, the Municipality and the University of Catania and with scientific interventions on the study of Etna.

During the day, the naming of the Etna Observatory headquarters after Alfred Rittmann (1893-1980) will be celebrated, and the photographic exhibition “The land of the poor Christians. The 1968 earthquake in Belice” will be inaugurated, with photos by Mondadori reporters Mario De Biasi, Sergio Del Grande, Giorgio Lotti and Alberto Roveri who managed to capture on film the light of the emotions of the earthquake victims of Belice, making Italy discover the incredible reality of a piece of the country that seemed to belong to the past.

Events on a national scale

The celebrations for the twenty-fifth anniversary will continue until June 2025 with a series of events organized in all the Italian offices of the INGV.

Rome, Naples, Catania, Milan, Bologna, Pisa, Grottaminarda, Palermo, Genoa, Lerici, Ancona, L'Aquila, Nicolosi: each location will be the protagonist of unique events, open to the public, including:

  • Scientific workshops focusing on current and future challenges in geophysics, featuring world-class scientists;
  • International seminars organized by the INGV magazine 'Annals of Geophysics' that will bring together experts from different countries on the progress made and the latest scientific discoveries;
  • Unpublished publications that will tell the history and achievements of the geosciences, but also the new frontiers of scientific research;
  • Outreach activities for the general public, with particular attention to schools and young people, with the aim of raising awareness among new generations about the knowledge and protection of our planet.

A story of excellence

Established in 1999, INGV has the task of studying and monitoring geophysical phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanoes in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea and of providing institutions with timely information and support for the management and prevention of natural risks.

The twenty-fifth anniversary is a journey of events and meetings to celebrate not only past successes, but also to look to the future, addressing the challenges that science and technology pose for the protection of our planet.
