With a rich calendar of seminars, games, workshops and excursions, the INGV is preparing to welcome students and enthusiasts in numerous Italian cities for a journey to discover the Geosciences

The appointment is back with Open Science, the great scientific event created byNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) to accompany 1st and 2nd grade high school students, as well as the entire public of curious and enthusiasts, to discover Earth Sciences.

This year too, the event involved various INGV offices, protagonists of numerous activities organized with the aim of raising awareness among participants of a conscious approach to the mechanisms that govern our planet.

Here are all the ScienzAperta events at INGV.

  • Lerici (SP)

Laboratory - “It's all about the climate”

edited by Giovanna Lucia Piangiamore and Alessandra Maramai
Friday 12 April 2024 | 9 am and 30 am | INGV headquarters in Lerici (at the ENEA S. Teresa Research Center, Loc. Pozzuolo)
A digital game will help to reflect on the causes and effects of climate change and to win it will be necessary to draw on knowledge about climate change and be able to find solutions and virtuous behaviors that should be adopted by everyone to mitigate the phenomena connected to climate change, one of the most urgent issues of our time.

Laboratory - “MEANING”

edited by Marina Locritani, Daniele Melini, Spina Cianetti, Nadia Lo Bue and Federica La Longa
Friday 12 April 2024 | 9 am and 30 am | INGV headquarters in Lerici (at the ENEA S. Teresa Research Center, Loc. Pozzuolo)
A game that aims to explore the possible meanings of the images reproduced on cards, making people reflect on the issues they address. The emotions activated by the cards are the starting point for disseminating scientific information useful for increasing awareness of the need to make sustainable choices to protect the environment.

  • Milano

Seminar - “The plates move: who pushes them?”
edited by Gemma Musacchio
Monday 15 April | 10 am | Territorial Research Area of Milan - Via Corti, 15

Plate Tectonics is the theory that explains how our Planet builds its Oceans and Continents. The continuous evolution of this theory, a pillar of modern geosciences, raises a series of questions, often closely connected to our indirect understanding of the Earth's interior. Among them, there is what was both lifeblood and obstacle for the development of this theory: what are the forces that push the tectonic plates? The seminar will illustrate to high school students where science stands on this topic.

Seminar - “Bad volcanoes, good volcanoes – Living with fiery neighbors”
edited by Boris Behncke

Tuesday 16 April | 10 am | Territorial Research Area of Milan - Via Corti, 15

When we think of volcanoes, we think of disasters, destruction and death. And it's true, volcanoes can cause great damage to both property and people, and they do so in many ways. However, without volcanoes, there would be no atmosphere we breathe, there would be no water on this planet and volcanoes have created - and are constantly creating - some of the most picturesque landscapes in the world. They give us very fertile soils and abundant building materials. Volcanoes are among the most popular destinations for travelers and offer extraordinary spectacles. We will explore the various roles volcanoes play in our lives and learn the latest news from some of Italy's volcanoes.

Seminar - “Plates, Earthquakes and Cities”
edited by Gemma Musacchio

Thursday 18 and Friday 19 April | 10 am | Territorial Research Area of Milan - Via Corti, 15

The most superficial part of our Planet is fragmented into moving Tectonic Plates; hundreds of earthquakes, small and large, mark its edges. The Plates undertake a journey that over millions of years of geological time leads to the construction of new oceans and continents; it is a journey made of wonderful landscapes, precious resources which however cause disasters when earthquakes occur near cities exposed to danger but unprepared to face it. The seminar will draw the attention of secondary school students to the need to learn to live with earthquakes.

Conference game - “Earth taboo”
edited by Maria Giovanna Sestito, Silvia Zidarich, Elisa Ferrari, Anna Figlioli, Sara Lovati, Marco Massa, Fabrizio Meroni, Boris Behncke and Gemma Musacchio

Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 April 2024 | 10:00 am | Territorial Research Area of Milan - Via Corti, 12

From the Taboo game to a participatory conference to talk about natural phenomena. The public will be invited to comment on the guessed words to reflect together with INGV researchers on the relationship between natural phenomena and society.

Seminar-workshop - “A jump to the ground”
edited by Sara Lovati, Marco Massa and Gemma Musacchio

Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 April 2024 | 10:00 am | Territorial Research Area of Milan - Via Corti, 12

Seminar-laboratory with a seismic station. INGV researchers show the functioning of a seismological station. One, two, many, one network? How many seismological stations are needed to study earthquakes? And what information do they provide us?

Educational laboratory - “Identikit of an earthquake”
edited by Gemma Musacchio, Sara Lovati, Marco Massa, Maria Giovanna Sestito, Silvia Zidarich, Elisa Ferrari, Anna Figlioli, and Fabrizio Meroni

Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 April 2024 | 10:00 am | Territorial Research Area of Milan - Via Corti, 12
Educational laboratory or serious game? A challenge to locate an earthquake, determine its magnitude in the shortest time possible and a red telephone waiting.

Game - “Traits, Land and Words”
edited by Silvia Zidarich, Maria Giovanna Sestito, Elisa Ferrari, Anna Figlioli, Sara Lovati, Marco Massa, Fabrizio Meroni, Boris Behncke and Gemma Musacchio

Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 April 2024 | 10:00 am | Territorial Research Area of Milan - Via Corti, 12
The “Pictionary” game to reveal the mystery behind the guessed words

Educational workshop - “Shake it!”

Thursday 18 and Friday 19 April 2024 | 10:00 am | Territorial Research Area of Milan - Via Corti, 12
Why do buildings collapse? A manipulation laboratory to explore seismic vulnerability, where each participant will be able to build their own building proof against... shaking table!

Educational laboratory - “Ampli-Fi & Liqui-Fi”

Seminar - “The seismic risk in Italy and research activities for its reduction”
edited by Carlo Meletti

Tuesday 23 April 2024 | 10:00 am | INGV headquarters in Pisa - Via Cesare Battisti, 53
The earthquakes of the last 50 years have cost Italy 200 billion euros and around 5000 victims. How can seismic risk be reduced? What knowledge and skills are needed? Today we are not able to predict an earthquake, but we know how to indicate the most dangerous areas, thanks to geology and seismology which allow us to develop seismic hazard models, the even more powerful tool for risk reduction.

We will discover together how to use physics and mathematics to understand volcanic processes: the rise of magma, eruptions, the dispersion of eruptive products. We will also understand which tools volcanological observatories use to assess the risk linked to the dispersion of ash in the atmosphere, and how they are organized to respond to possible emergencies.
